Wallaroo Jetty

This area is surrounded by nets under the water, it's called "the pool", kids can swim in here and there's no sharks because they can't get through the nets, although sting rays have swum below the nets before, and we've ended up swimming between them all. The jetty around this part has been ruined by storms a lot before, and is now extremely unsafe. The council's idea of fixing it means putting new stairs in, not fixing any of the rusting structure or broken boards. The small platform in this photo is a catwalk, there used to be one on the other side but they removed it. We used to come swimming here every weekend, and jump from all the different levels.

The tall structure in this photo is the Hughes Chimney Stack, which is the only above-ground structure remaining from the mines, back in the 1800's. The lower half of it is a different colour - this was "restoration" which started in 2005, and was never properly done. This picture shows Office Beach in the distance too, and the mounds of dirt which are contaminated by arsenic from the mines - but which are about to be turned into lots for houses.

The water at the pool stays really clear, so most of the time you can see down to the bottom (this water is about 7-8 feet deep), and see small reefs or barnacles stuck to the structures of the catwalk.

Navy boats used to dock at this spot.

"Aeolian Spirit" - ships from all parts of the world dock here to receive grain and wheat from the silos
